Borrelia genomic

Hi, I’m Cristina and I recently completed my Master’s Degree in Experimental and Applied Biology (April 2024) at the University of Pavia. I’m currently working with several colleagues on the Borrelia genomics project. Borrelia is a small gram negative bacterium whose normal reservoir is a variety of small mammals. The bacterium can be transmitted to humans by the bite of infected ticks. Some Borrelia species are known as the causative agents of Lyme borreliosis (Lyme disease). Therefore studying Borrelia is important due to the consequences that the pathogen can have on people’s health. The goal of this project is to obtain Italian high-quality genomes of Borrelia. This pathogen has a very complex genome and cell cultures are very challenging therefore the participation of different people with different skills is essential.
